Entreprise Coopérative Kimbe

Financing fair trade cocoa trade with a strong social impact

Côte d'Ivoire

Fair trade

Trade in products that have been certified and carry a fair trade label. An example of this is a farmer’s cooperative that collectively sells its cocoa to a fair trade organization.

The certified cocoa cooperative union Entreprise Coopérative Kimbe (Ecookim) is an important player in Côte d'Ivoire’s cocoa value chain. Ecookim was established in 2004 and represents 23 farmer cooperatives with over 13,000 members in 12 different provinces (2017). The union’s core objective is to ensure that cocoa farmers receive a greater share of the profits by selling directly on the international cocoa market.

Ecookim’s main activity consists of buying and processing raw cocoa from cooperatives and exporting cocoa beans. Members also have access to services such as technical assistance, training and pre-purchase financing.

The union's associated cooperatives' members are organised into sub-sections. It has a strong farmers' network, which offers technical, social and community support.

Ecookim's social impact is high given its focus on low-income and disadvantaged groups in impoverished areas in western and northern Côte d'Ivoire.

Entreprise Coopérative Kimbe has been an Oikocredit partner since 2016.
