Development Approach

Double-Bottom Line

What do we mean by a "double-bottom line"? Oikocredit invests in people by providing credit, through loans, to cooperatives and development organizations dedicated to serving the poor.

Double Bottom-Line Approach

Selecting Our Partners

Through our partners, Oikocredit’s portfolio touches the lives of 28 million people. Our partners provide credit, savings and other financial services, as well as education, healthcare, agricultural development, and other services designed to serve low-income communities.

Applying ESG

ESG (Environmental, Social and Governance) generally denotes the central criteria Oikocredit considers when making an investment in a project or partner organization. Oikocredit selects partners who exhibit leadership and responsibility through ESG.

Building Local Capacity

Not every model for poverty alleviation is appropriate for every situation. In addition to the financial and social criteria used to evaluate partners, Oikocredit also employs local expertise in every region in which we work to ensure that we’re supporting the right projects.

Why volunteer groups?

Oikocredit Support Associations are collectives of volunteers whose members are engaged in promoting Oikocredit’s mission. Volunteer associations are part of a long-standing tradition in Oikocredit’s work. In addition to being active volunteers for Oikocredit, Support Associations are members of the Oikocredit International cooperative.

Oikocredit has two Support Associations based in the US – the Western Pennsylvania Support Association and the Oikocredit Northwest Support Association based in Seattle. Click on the regions to learn more about how you can get involved in your local Support Association.
