Why volunteer groups?

Oikocredit Support Associations are collectives of volunteers whose members are engaged in promoting Oikocredit’s mission. Volunteer associations are part of a long-standing tradition in Oikocredit’s work. In addition to being active volunteers for Oikocredit, Support Associations are members of the Oikocredit International cooperative.

Oikocredit has two Support Associations based in the US – the Western Pennsylvania Support Association and the Oikocredit Northwest Support Association based in Seattle. Click on the regions to learn more about how you can get involved in your local Support Association.

Nigeria and Senegal declared Ebola free

seap-nigeria.jpgOctober 21 2014

Despite the ongoing Ebola epidemic in West Africa, Oikocredit’s operations in the region continue unaffected by the virus.

Oikocredit operates in two of the affected countries, Senegal and Nigeria, with investments totalling €10.8 million. This is approximately 1.5 percent of Oikocredit’s total development finance portfolio. Nigeria and Senegal have recently been declared Ebola free by the World Health Organization (WHO). The WHO declares an Ebola outbreak over if two incubation periods of 21 days pass with no new cases.  Both West African countries have been praised for acting early, quickly, and on a large scale.

Oikocredit’s country manager in Nigeria, Ufuoma Eghwerehe, said she is proud of the way in which Nigeria has dealt with the situation and reports that partners and staff are all safe and well.

Although Oikocredit does not have activities in the other three West African countries affected by Ebola, we are heartened that international organizations, governments and donors are rallying to provide more assistance to those countries.
