Why volunteer groups?

Oikocredit Support Associations are collectives of volunteers whose members are engaged in promoting Oikocredit’s mission. Volunteer associations are part of a long-standing tradition in Oikocredit’s work. In addition to being active volunteers for Oikocredit, Support Associations are members of the Oikocredit International cooperative.

Oikocredit has two Support Associations based in the US – the Western Pennsylvania Support Association and the Oikocredit Northwest Support Association based in Seattle. Click on the regions to learn more about how you can get involved in your local Support Association.

Update on Ebola in West Africa

November 26 2014

Despite the ongoing Ebola epidemic in West Africa, which has now spread to Mali, Oikocredit’s operations in the region remain unaffected by the virus.

Mali, the newest country to be caught up in the epidemic, reported its seventh Ebola death this week, with another 310 people under surveillance by the health ministry. Oikocredit has an office in Mali’s capital, Bamako, with investments in the country totalling € 4.7 million. Mali is part of Oikocredit's West Africa portfolio, which totals € 19.5 million.

Oikocredit country manager for Mali, Lassina Sanou, said the situation is worrying, however our office and partners in the region remain operational. “As prevention is more important than cure, we’ve taken preventative measures such as not shaking hands, installing a gel dispenser and encouraging all those who enter the office to rinse their hands at the entrance,” said Lassina. “We will remain in contact with all of our partner organizations and urge them to take preventative measures against the virus,” added Lassina.

Last month it was announced that Nigeria and Senegal were declared Ebola free by the World Health Organization (WHO). The WHO declares an Ebola outbreak over if two incubation periods of 21 days pass with no new cases.  Both West African countries have been praised for acting early, quickly, and on a large scale.

Over the coming months, Oikocredit will continue to monitor the situation and provide updates when available.
