Oikocredit USA, a member of Netherlands-based cooperative financial institution Oikocredit, is launching its second Summer of Microfinance campaign on June 3, 2011. The national kick-off event will take place on Friday, June 3 at 6pm and feature Terry Provance of Oikocredit USA and Leigh Carter of Fonkoze USA.

Ms. Carter was in Haiti during the 2010 earthquake that devastated the country.  She will talk about Haiti’s journey over the last year, Fonkoze’s support of its clients and staff as the country rebuilds, and how Oikocredit’s funding contributed to its success. Mr. Provance, a lifelong activist on behalf of workers’ rights, poverty alleviation and microfinance, will discuss the Summer of Microfinance theme the Power of Microfinance, and its role as a means of transforming the lives of the working poor across the globe.  The Summer of Microfinance is a collaborative nation-wide effort that allows Oikocredit USA investors to reach out to their communities to share the power of microfinance and encourage others to invest.

Oikocredit USA offers a unique opportunity to investors who wish to fund socially responsible causes with their investments. Oikocredit makes available a variety of investment opportunities from $20 and up at a maximum 2% return. Oikocredit distinguishes itself from microfinance investment vehicles (MIVs) by supporting a full range of income-generating projects for and by disadvantaged people through low-cost financing. Oikocredit is a leader in promoting socially responsible microfinance and offers investors the opportunity to reach the world’s poorest working people.

Oikocredit USA investors and supporters are encouraged to take part in the Summer of Microfinance to become their own ambassadors of Oikocredit. Already Oikocredit has planned events to take place in San Diego, San Francisco, Seattle, Boston, and the greater Washington, DC area.
