Poignant words from Oikocredit Staff in Ivory Coast

Poignant words from Oikocredit Staff in Ivory Coast

Political unrest-turned-Civil War in Ivory Coast as reaching a frightening head.

UN peace keepers and French military forces are now engaged in a military assault on Laurent Gbagbo’s supporting forces. Ivorian opposition forces in support of President-elect Alassane Ouattara are engaged in a direct assault of Gbagbo’s residence in Abidjan; Gbagbo has refused to step down despite international recognition of his loss in November’s presidential election.

There is no end to the violence in sight; nor any political solution despite diplomatic negotiations between the French and Gbagbo’s political team.

Meanwhile there is a humanitarian crisis plaguing Ivorians; residents lack food, electricity, water, and safety. To illustrate this, we want to share some poignant words from Mariam Dao, Oikocredit’s Regional Manager for Francophone Africa, whose offices are in Abidjan.

“Please convey to all the [Oikocredit International] staff our gratitude for your prayers, we never, never, never thoughts that it will come to this chaos. Food is missing and even with money you can’t buy anything. All staff members are ok.

Lets keep in prayers and thanks again

With love

Thank you for your support, prayers, willingness to share the reality of the situation in Ivory Coast with your communities. Oikocredit not only has staff based in Abidjan, but an important partner – the COCOVICO Market – which you can learn more about here.
